Carnegie Learning Middle School Math Course 1

Each student will be given a username and password to access the math program online (text, videos, practice pages, etc.). If you do not have internet capabilities, your child may check out a textbook to keep at home until the end of the year.

Instructional Objectives:

In Grade 6, instructional time should focus on four critical areas: (1) connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems; (2) completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers; (3) writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations; and (4) developing understanding of statistical thinking.

Course Overview:

1st Semester

Unit 1 - Number System Fluency

Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to divide fractions by fractions.

Compute fluently with multi-digit numbers and find common factors and multiples.

Unit 2 - Expressions

Apply and extend previous understandings of arithmetic to algebraic expressions.

Unit 3 - Rate, Ratio and Proportional Reasoning

Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems.

Unit 4 - One-Step Equations and Inequalities

Reason about and solve one-variable equations and inequalities.

Represent and analyze quantitative relationships between dependent and independent variables.

Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems.

2nd Semester

Unit 5 - Rational Explorations: Numbers and their Opposites

Apply and extend previous understandings of numbers to the system of rational numbers.

Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume.

Unit 6 - Area and Volume

Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume.

Unit 7 - Statistics

Develop understanding of statistical variability.

Summarize and describe distributions.

Unit 8 - Integers Preview lesson for 7th grade

Grading Policy:

Each student's academic grade will be determined using the following criteria.

Tests 35% of grade

Final Exam 20% of grade

Quizzes/Assignments/Homework 45% of grade

Students should have a supply of #2 pencils sharpened and ready to use for class. Students will use a 3 ring binder for class assignments and homework.

Homework is given Monday through Thursday and will cover current material from class as well as content that has been previously covered. Practice and constant review reinforces skills taught throughout the year as well as promotes responsibility. Any assignments not finished in class, should be finished as homework.

A unit test will be given after completion of each unit. Quizzes will be given throughout the unit. All returned tests and quizzes should be placed in the student's notebook.

Please sign the bottom portion of this syllabus and place it in your child's math notebook. You may refer back to it while checking to see what your child has completed throughout the school year.
